Carbon credit orders

Carbon credits are permits that represent one tonne of carbon dioxide (tCO₂) or an equivalent greenhouse gas removed or prevented from entering the atmosphere.Organisations purchase carbon credits to offset their emissions by funding certified environmental projects, such as reforestation, renewable energy development, or carbon capture technologies. Each credit corresponds to a verified reduction or removal of emissions, helping to mitigate climate change. For example, a company emitting 10 tonnes of CO₂ can offset its footprint by purchasing 10 carbon credits, ensuring their net impact on the atmosphere is zero. When purchasing carbon credits through Lune, you can decide what projects are funded, and generate a carbon credit certificate for your customer.

Selecting your projects

Lune connects customers to high-quality carbon offset projects grouped into Project bundles and portfolios.Project bundles are groups of offsetting projects with shared characteristics. Examples include Conserving forests in Asia or Ocean Carbon Removal. While it’s common to choose several project bundles for your carbon offsets, Lune offers a curated group of project bundles, called a bundle portfolio. Bundle portfolios include specific project bundles based on a common theme, such as the Oxford Offsetting Principles.
Lune defaults
Every Account and Client account is set up with Lune defaults. This means that unless overwritten, all orders for carbon credits are distributed across the following project bundles:
  • Conserving forests in Asia – 95%
  • Enhanced rock weathering – 5%
If you’d like to override the defaults, you can retrieve all the available Project bundles and Bundle portfolios, and then update the account preferences using either the selections endpoint (to self allocate projects and percentages) or the portfolios endpoint to set a curated bundle portfolio for the client account.

Making an order

You can order carbon credits through Lune by using the API or the dashboard. Once an order is placed, it progresses through a defined lifecycle with specific statuses:
  • Received: Order has been received by Lune, but has not been processed.
  • Placed: Order has been placed against Project Bundles.
  • Paid: Order has been paid.
  • Retiring: Order has credits partially allocated or retired. The order's certificate is issued.
  • Complete: Order has been fully retired. The order's certificate includes all retired credits.
  • Cancelled: Order has been cancelled by Lune.
  • Failed: Order failed to process.
When a credit has been permanently removed from circulation and used for the offset, it is considered retired. Carbon credit retirements occur in discrete tonnes of CO₂e. Orders are aggregated on a first come first serve basis until they total 1 tCO₂ per account and beneficiary.
Carbon credit certificates
Lune issues Carbon credit certificates to document the retirement of carbon credits. Certificates are generated once an order reaches the Retiring stage and updated upon completion. Each certificate includes:
  • A link to the official retirement ledger on the registry’s website.
  • Details of the retired credits (project, quantity, and source).
  • Information about the beneficiary claiming the carbon benefit.
  • Verification to confirm compliance with established carbon standards.
Certificates provide a transparent record of offset activity for your customers.
